I wear a suit for work these days.  When I get home I usually go upstairs to the armoury to change out of it, to avoid getting dinner all over my good shirts and better trousers.

Question: having removed suit, shirt and tie, which is the more sensible approach to putting on a t-shirt and casual trousers?

A)  Trousers first, so although you can't see where you're going as you walk downstairs while pulling a t-shirt over your head you at least have unencumbered feet.

Or

B) T-shirt first, so although you have no control over your legs as you walk downstairs while putting your trousers on you can at least see where you're going.

Despite repeated empirical testing I can't honestly say which is better, so I thought it might be useful to try getting some theorising to determine the question.  Any thoughts?

Personally I would ensure that both t-shirt and trousers were both in place before venturing downstairs. However, after that, my decision would depend on whether I was tucking my t-shirt into my trousers or not. In practice, I only tuck t-shirts in when I'm wearing a jumper on top. If I'm not tucking in, it would be trousers first. If I am, it would be trousers second, so that the tucking in happens automatically.

Doing both before going downstairs is just a waste of time, is it not? What is one supposed to do whilst on the stairs?

You need to find something to occupy yourself whilst going down a flight of stairs?

Aah. [Sudden Realisation]

This must be what life is like for people whose brain isn't mostly occupied by Football Manager tactics...

This is an interesting insight into the mind of someone who is not liked by cats. When I go downstairs, I need to devote my entire mind to making sure I don't trip over an over-affectionate cat hurling itself at my ankles.

Two thoughts.

1. It's summer, go topless.
2. Wear a dress

Both only require you to put one thing on, leaving you free to ponder life the universe & everything whilst descending the stairs.

Have you ever fallen over due to this practice whilst going downstairs? If not, please do so. I would like to use you as a cautionary tale to reinforce my warnings to my children not to put clothes on or off while on the stairs :-)

Nope, not never. LoA keeps saying I will, but I have a 100% safety record on this.

I feel that in the spirit of evidence-based policy-making you ought to disclose this to the nippers :-)

I like the debate so far!

I offer two unseasonal suggestions for further (summer) experimentation:

1) see-through T-shirts (thin, pale ones allow you to see enough of the stairs)

2) shorts (it's quite hard to trip yourself up with shorts unless you have studied with a master and put in several years of practice!)

And there is always arnica for the bruises.
