Getting on the ferry this morning, I went down the tunnel to the boat and got told to wait for a bit while they checked how many seats were left. Not an uncommon occurrence, especially as both big ferries seem to be broken at the moment and they're reduced to the two little ones.

The two women coming down the tunnel behind me carried on, to stop beside me but slightly in front.

Chappy on the ferry says "1 more", and the women who'd come down behind stepped forward holding out their tickets for collection!

Luckily the chappy said there's only 1 seat at the moment but maybe more, so I got on while they were in disarray, but still! If there'd been two seats left I might have lost my opportunity to be polite and let them on instead of me (I cannot stand people who are so rude as to wrongly deny me the chance to be polite to them); as it was, it looked almost as though they were being polite to me when in fact they were just having their rudeness rightly rebuffed!

They got on anyway, as there were actually about half a dozen seats.

I think I nearly blinked with shock when they stepped forward. Outrageous!

I had an experience along similar lines yesterday at the baker's. There was a single rye loaf left, and I had my eye on it, but was trying to catch the eye of someone behind the counter to see if it was all right to lay hands on the loaf myself (it being so unusual these days not to be required to use tongs or such). I turned back to find an elderly gent had walked up beside me, and he took the loaf just as I opened my hand to reach for it! I looked gobsmacked and he looked embarrassed and presently offered to be a gentleman and let me have it, whereupon my London-Transport-honed "exCUSE me" response was over-ridden by "age before beauty", so I insisted he take it. If he'd not offered I'd have been really cross, but seeing as he did, I was mollified!

You could always get up when your alarm went off, and thus arrive at the ferry somewhat earlier than ten seconds before it's due to leave, and then you'd not have to be outraged or polite.

Can we keep with realistic suggestions, here? :-D

Anyway, I *was* more than 10 seconds early. It's just that they seem to have broken both their big boats and don't have room for everyone on the little ones.
