LARPing yesterday
Sep. 17th, 2007 01:46 pmI decided to start a new character, and eight other people apparently decided to end their existing ones.
I decided to retire my old character, who was a rather arrogant nobleman who basically spent all his time being fed up at the stupidity and incompetence of all the other adventurers. While this was quite fun, it was always a strain trying to work out why he was adventuring. So after he had won himself some land and distinguished himself on the field of battle a few times I thought he might as well go off to be an NPC.
I have replaced him with what I regard as the essential character of Fools and Heroes: a Grey Knight. For those not familiar with the system, Grey Knights are essentially Knights of the Round Table in all their most virtuous glory - indeed, there is a cabal of them in the system with Arthurian names. Knights can be a bit pious and serious, so I've decided to go the other way and be rather a happy-go-lucky eager knight (and yet still pious etc). This seems to be working out well.
On my first adventure I got wounded several times, but still managed to be as useful as a fighter with no weapons or armour can be. People were very helpful, and told me all about the different monsters I met, so I made some friends - more than Guisbourne ever did ;-) I also thought it was very nice when I started singing, it being such a beautiful day, and people (or so I am told) thought "I should really tell him to stop, as he'll bring the monsters on us. But he's too naive and nice, I can't squish him like that" :-D
I'm very glad I didn't go on the other adventure, which was given a choice between "the easy route" and "the really hard route on which you will die". Naturally they took the latter, and met lots of demons. Demon-possessed peasants are the most evil monster I've come across. Not only can you sneak into a party because you look like a worried peasant, but you can deal out a lot of damage when you do attack *and* force them to use up their enchanted weapons on you - *and* then when they eventually drive the demon out they have to use 6 bandages and a purge poison on you because, hey, you're only a peasant, they can't leave you to die :-) With three monsters we used up four enchants, 18 bandages, and loads of physician drugs :-D
Then the party got to the hard bit, where they needed all the weapons and healing they could get... The final encounter was set up to be very obviously "Oh, look, something magical guarded by so many demons we couldn't possibly fight them all, we'd better go home to report on it". So, naturally, the party attacked. Due to excessive restraint on the part of the demons only one party member was left behind when the rest fled. The remainder came back and tried to bargain for him... the bargainer eventually got chopped down, although the first prisoner was rescued by enormous expenditures of magic and potions, and the rest fled. Again.
But not far. They sort of hung around nervously.
So we arranged for the prisoner to be possessed and to go and drive the party off - and they counter-attacked! All the other monsters had packed up, on the grounds that the party couldn't be so stupid - having been defeated twice already - but they insisted on attacking again. So we had to kit up again and drive them off, but would they run? No, they stood their ground, and got beaten up by enchanted weapons and poison, and when we ran after them very slowly to give them a chance they used their headstart to... turn round and attack again! All very heroic, but very very confusing to us poor monsters. So in the end three (out of eight) were taken by the demons, and the rest finally convinced (by lots of slow chasing and loud roaring and sabre-rattling) to go home.
"Leave no man behind" has got to be the worst possible motto for an FnH party ;-D

Date: 2007-09-17 01:32 pm (UTC)No to mention the monters. I don't much like doing the "I'm the big bad" thing so tended to delegate - the result being occasions where I had "the bad guy said WHAT?" moments.
I hope you still got paid...
I have a nasty feeling I got kidnapped on the way back and had to be rescued a month later. One of those classic "do not let the Vleyborian respond to the monsters' request for healing" moments.

Date: 2007-09-17 01:41 pm (UTC)Yesterday I fudged one death count to get out of it; the next time I made sure I had a backstory and even some information to impart, but they lost interest once they'd healed me. Or seen a butterfly, or something.

I love that "Quick! we must get a posse together and ride out to the rescue! But not for four or five weeks!" aspect of FnH :-)
In this case we've broken the mould: the three demon captives may be rescued in only 3 weeks, due to Pompey playing late this month.
