Well, back from live-roleplaying and I'm pleased to say that although I thought I was dead on Saturday afternoon, apparently a physician stopped the bleeding just in time and so I survived. It's odd walking around being greeted by cries of "I thought you were dead!" :-)

However, the death I suffered on Sunday afternoon did happen. Being ahead of the party (or rather behind the party, as it fled), surrounded by foes and unable to walk rather has that effect. It's odd to be lying in the middle of a compound hearing folk you barely know bewailing your fate while a necromancer sends your soul to join the Gods 0:-D

I should have seen the New Kit Curse coming when I not only made myself some new kit but *also* helped someone else make herself some earlier that weekend. She ended up lying next to me in the funeral :-(

I'm sad to lose the character, as he was fun to play; but it was nice to lose him where he was prominent among the 200-odd people. That way I spent the rest of the day with lots of very kind people saying how they'd liked him and how sad they were that he was dead. Definitely the right way to go :-)

Hmm, you'd think there'd be a "Dead" mood icon. This'll have to do...

You can always type "dead" next to the exanimate mood icon :)

True, I forgot about that. But "exanimate" sounds as if it might mean pretty much the same thing :-)

Actually you shouldn't laugh...I did dream last night that you were seriously hurt while role-playing. I guess the dream just didn't distinguish between your character and your actual self.

Gosh, spooky.

To be honest, playing I knight I am bound to be seriously hurt (in character) very regularly. The way the system works I need to be hit in the same place a minimum of 8 or 9 times for me to take any damage, because my armour stops the first ones. Perversely, that means that I don't end up fighting normal people with swords, I end up facing demons with blades that cleave armour like paper, or mages who zap me from a distance. I'd probably get wounded less if I had less armour, as I'd be a less dangerous target :-)

Int he space of half an hour or so on Saturday, for example, I was variously chopped down by a demon, made to writhe in agony and chopped down by a demon as I recovered, struck down by demonic power which tore my body apart, and writhed again and stabbed as I was doing it. I barely got to actually fight anyone, I was either in agony or unconscious most of the time :-) I drew my blest blade three times against three demons and never got the chance to strike a blow with it :-)

Plenty of other chances to fight, though. Went out later and killed some pseudo-Frenchmen (not my fight, but they treacherously stabbed me then stole my sword, so I went to get it back. They did NOT taunt me a second time :-) ).

It all sounds very....invigorating. ;-)

Although, what is a "blest" blade? Did a priest spake words over it?

Yup. I had the High Father Chaplain to my Order use the powers granted him by our god to bless the weapon. Nice little ritual, tie a red ribbon round it, and off you go: by its holy power it'll slice through armour or destroy nasty magical/demonic/undead things that are immune to normal weapons.

That's one of the best bits about playing a knight: you get a lot of ready-made friends, people in general are nice to you, and you can froth up the formality.

My new one's not such a nice chap, but hopefully he'll still have some fun role-playing opportunities. I feel a bit cheesy to play a knight again, especially as that makes three in a row (though the first one only actually lasted about a week), but dammit I don't want to be some milksop mage or priest, I want to be chivalrous.

And given the amount of metal clothing I have, it seems such a waste to be wearing robes :-)

Ah, the angst. You are a knight by default, due to society's expectations (you are male), and wardrobe limitations (you possess chainmail but not a mage robe). I can just see it now, your character pining away in the middle of battle, wishing for his own cleric staff...

Angst, angst, angst - is that all you authors ever think about? ;-)

Cyril was a very happy chappy, I'll have you know. A little confused, but very cheerful about it.

Mage robes are easy enough to make, I just don't really fancy being a mage. Life gets too complicated if you have to remember all that stuff; just go out and smite evil and be done with it. If you can work out who is evil, of course...

Hmm, that's disturbing - it sounds almost as if I was playing one of Ladyofastolat's Baldur's Gate characters. Ah, no: he actually used his brains, and could string a sentence together. And I'm not blonde and muscly. Phew! :-D

Why, you make that sound like it's a bad thing! ;-)

And I'm staying out of any discussion that involves Ladyofastolat. She would smite me in a heartbeat if I took your side.

My characters have never been blond and muscly, I'll have you know. Even my strength 18/00 paladins are lean and pale and interesting-looking, like tortured poets, and they're dark-haired, too. They are also very angsty and tormented in their minds about the morality of smiting, and - at least in the Solaufein mod - they are gay. In short, they are highly complex animals.

They are thick, though. I'll grant you that. When you want 18/00 strength and 18 dexterity and 18 charisma, something has to go. Who needs brains, anyway.

I can never stand to have my dialogue limited by poor INT. So I always put WIS and CHA on the chopping block first.

I tend to put WIS even lower than INT. Except in PS:T, of course, when you need wisdom and intelligence in order to recover your memories, and open up millions of dialogue options and plot points. That was quite a wrench - having to create a character that had points in all those attributes I normally ignore.

Did you ever finish PS:T, by the way?

No, I didn't. Although it's the next game I want to turn to.

Right now I'm still working sloooowly on my solo-no-reloads game. Last night with the help of a few scrolls of Protection from Undead, I went through the Shade Lord's temple. Although I tiptoed past the dragon and let him be. No way am I facing a dragon on a no-reloads game!

Indeed, I am that man. Was that man. Something like that. Has my fame been spreading after my death? His death. Whatever.

Ooh, I recognise that well-tanned face. Hello, Faith!

Hello Sir Cyril - or whoever you are now. A Griffin squire, right?

It's amazing what you can find doing an interests search on Fools and Heroes. There's even a community, though it's virtually inactive.

Yep, I'm one of the new intake of Griffins. If I'd known there'd be quite so many I might have gone for something else, but then again having three of us in Guildford/Portsmouth should make for some interesting missions :-)

I can see how an FnH community would be a bit quiet - what would you want to say here that wouldn't be better on the main boards?

Ha, you should try the stress of LARP. No reloads there either, plus you can't just "accidentally" pull the plug if things are going wrong :-)

It's not like the Church can't use the numbers. Ten lost in August, not counting Faith.

LJ communities are not something to ask 'why' about. They just are.

Well why would I be counting Faith? Yes, she's a Crowan priestess; but a half-orc? No real loss.

(Gosh, it's confusing switching from a Grey's opinions on these things to a Griffin's :-) )
