Real life consequences
Jan. 23rd, 2006 07:28 pmIt's disconcerting to find that what you do on-line can have real-life consequences.
Sometime last week I got into a discussion on the LARPing board. Essentially, someone put up a notice to say some religious people had been arrested for laying a body to rest against the wishes of the family. After a couple of replies along the lines of "oh, we'd better have a chat about that", someone said "right, we'd better go in, cut the guards down, bust them out of jail and lay the corpses to rest on the way out".
I pointed out that this was not really the sort of reaction that endears the churches to the general population, and immediately got leapt on by people saying I shouldn't criticise people. To cut a long story short, I ended up with a lot of people offering dire threats in my general direction for being disrespectful to the leaders of the guilds of Scouts and of Physicians.
To cap it all, the next wave of people to read the thread pointed out that I was quite right and reasonable, and it's a hit harsh to paint me as how the bad guy when it was the priest who mentioned slaughtering innocent people in order to defy the law.
So, off adventuring yesterday. Couple of normal encounters, then we meet a couple of scouts and a physician who said they wanted a word with me. Fine: lots of people have wanted quiet words with me, ever since I did the whole hiring on as henchman to a vampire seeking to take over the city, etc etc etc.
So off I go, only to be treacherously cut down from behind, waking up to find that my tongue had been stapled to my bottom lip "to teach me not to be disrespectful". Not so bad - I spent the rest of the day being almost incomprehensible, but not otherwise a big problem - until I found that it would cost me 15 crowns to get it fixed without scarring. Note that I earned 10 crowns for the day, and that's about 50% over the going rate. Grrrrrr....
So, I've bunged a highly outraged letter off to the relevant guild leaders. Basically: I want an apology, I want the perpetrators slapped down, I want at least 15 crowns back, and I want them to do the dirty work for me.
So, cat among the pigeons - should be fun :-)
Oh, by the way, the two people I'm blaming have, so far as I'm aware, no idea whatsoever that anything would actually happen. It was all arranged by the local GMs :-D
Tee hee.
