Fear, uncertainty, doubt
Jan. 10th, 2006 11:24 amFor the last few years I have had my watch deliberately set fast, primarily in an effort to provide myself with a margin for error when going to the ferry.
However, I quickly adapted to this and so found that I needed to set it two minutes fast to avoid overconfidence. This escalated, and by last week I had the blasted thing five minutes fast, and found that I had adapted to it so much that I was starting to disbelieve anything with a dial. Not so bad with clocks, but potentially a big issue with speedometers.
So I have now set my watch to the correct time. By habit, I think it's five minutes fast; I then remember it's not, and start wondering what the positions of the hands actually means. I think this cultivates a healthy doubt over what time it actually is, and so far seems to result in me hurrying to places just to be on the safe side.
This is probably a Good Thing. I wonder how long it'll last.
