A couple of people have asked, so here we go:

LadyofAstolat and I are indeed intending to host another Wightfrag, on the second May bank holiday, as is traditional (23-26 May this year).

All the normal stuff is planned: UT for as many as will, Guitar Hero on the PS2, and Wii Sports probably being the main things.

More details etc to follow nearer the time.

Bunn and I are both up for it, barring unforeseen circumstances...

Might there possibly be some more Wii games by then? I can supply PS2 Guitar Hero 3 and up to two guitars (might make sense to bring spares), and one or two UT2004 capable PCs. I'm assuming that the level of competence of the eight PCs we normally aim for will not be UT3 capable, even if someone on your friends list is boasting on facebook about upgrading her PC to play Bioshock!

I must remember to bring my MP3 player so I don't have to listen to the same songs being played over and over and over and over again on Guitar Hero ;-)

I'll certainly like there to be board games* for at least one of the days, as a break from the constant killing.

We can keep offer Outside for those foolish enough to believe that it exists.

* Okay. Board game. Or, more likely, half a board game.

Want to borrow my spare one? It doesn't have any heavy metal on it, in case you were wondering :-)

That's OK, I have a Stout Stick you can use if required :-)

A break from killing? Board games just mean you kill in large quantities rather than one by one - saves time!

It never feels quite so much like wanton slaughter when my aggression results in the removal from a board of a little cardboard square or a cute plastic tank. Blowing the head off a human representation of one of my friends, and watching their limbs spiral in different directions, splattering blood to the four corners of the screen... It does seem a little... more... visceral. Plus, when talking about it afterwards at work, it does seem to result in more people backing away slowly, their eyes flitting from side to side in nervous terror.

Rock Band is due out in Europe in March allegedly. Am I right in thinking you own an XBox360? It will be available for PS2 too, but in a cut down form.

Visceral. Good word.

Would make for a good Sith, don't you think? Darth Visceral.

Maybe we could get some non-violent board games...

Nope: normal XBox, PS2 and Wii.

I might want to buy an XBox360 / PS3 + Rock Band before Wightfrag then! Whaddya think?

And is your telly SD, HD-Ready or FullHD?

Er, it's big and it's flat :-D

It has lots and lots of sockets at the back in addition to the co-ax and Scart ones that I understand. One of them might be something HDish :-D

What's wrong with the wanton slaughter of your friends? That's what I turn up for :-D

*pops down to check* It says HD-Ready on the front.

Nothing at all! I just like a little variety in my slaughter: blowing their heads off one day, then wiping out 10,000 of their soldiers on a board the next day. I like to think of myself as a well-rounded evil overlord. (And no jokes about diets here, please, Pellinor.)

It all gets bit meaningless for me when it's 10,000 soldiers on a board. No blood, no guts, no bouncing decapitated heads... Where's the fun in that :-D

The fun comes in watching your opponent biting their lip with anxiety as they struggle to find a strategy that will save them from annihilation; as you watch them grimace in distress and cry "No!" as their little cardboard pieces are removed from the board one by one by inexorable one; as you can virtually hear their brains desperately working in an attempt to claw victory back from defeat.

It's like how in UT the best bit is hearing cries of "No!" drift up or down the stairs after you've killed someone an inch from the goal. In a board game, it's not just a distant voice drifting up the stairs; you get full visuals, too.

But no blood or severed limbs :-(

Maybe I should design a board game that has blood & guts :-D

Or we should make more of an effort to shout "RAMPAGE!"

Well we have 5 PCs that can play UT2k4, and I'd be surprised if we don't get another 3, so number of PCs is not a problem so long as you can get yourself here. The middle of a high dependency placement sounds like just the time you might need a weekend of mindless violence to relax with, too :-)

I think 3 of ours meet the minimum specs for UT3, but I don't think we're up to recommended by any means.

Our Half Term plans have fallen through so could you mange three more? We can bring a PS2, various game boys and probably misc other consoles (she says vaguely) plus games for same. We don't do PCs so no help there though I'm afraid.

We will also bring a four year who likes to sit in people's laps when they play games and direct their actions especially where there is a choice of what characters will wear.

Of course we can manage.

A PS2 we have, but game boys and games for existing consoles would be welcome.

When you say you don't do PCs, I assume that you will do PC games... :-) Everyone likes Unreal Tournament :-D

4 year-old should enjoy Guitar Hero and Rock band... any number of costumes and guitars to play with :-)

Looks like we will definitely be turning up though we need to work out the logistics - we may not arrive until Saturday - depends on whether we think we can survive a the trip with a four-year-old only leaving after school on a Friday half-term before a bank holiday :-)

Will there be more details nearer the time - i.e., should we bring lilos? a tent? food? beer?

Date: 2008-02-25 11:29 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] king-pellinor.livejournal.com
OK, email sent around with some more details. Yet more will come out nearer the time :-)

The quick summary: bring whatever bedding and so on you need, which could range from none (if you're in a B&B or our spare room) to lilos and sleeping bags (if on the floor) to a tent if you want to camp. We can supply some airbeds and bags and so on, though.

Food and drink: LadyofAstolat and I normally lay on a load of beer and some snack food, and something solid for the Friday night and Saturday morning. After that we rely on everyone else and it becomes a bit of a free for all, with some people bringing stuff, at least one supermarket run, and takeaways.

Generally, it's best to sort out who's coming and work things out nearer the time. We tend to have a lot of emails flying around in the last couple of weeks :-) Occasionally it breaks down and we find we have to live on nothing but cheese, or copious qunatities of fruit (over-compensating for the cheese the time before, I think), but mostly it works :-)
