I'm checking a comapny's fixed assets to see if there some I can use for my nefarious arcane tax purposes. The problem is they're owned by a German firm, and buy a lot of kit from Germany.

Now I can just about work out what a Standardarbeitsplatz might be.

A Bildmustergenerator is getting a bit confusing, though.

And when they start talking about Funkstormessempfangers, I find myself looking for the magic sword I need to defeat them... :-)

Bildmustergenerator

test pattern generator.

I'm afraid the other one has me stumped.

Thanks :-)

Babelfish seems stumped too: it comes up with "more funkstormessempfanger" as the translation :-)

I actually resorted to wandering the factory floor pointing at stuff, rather than trying to work out what the words mean.

I rather liked that the literal translation of Bildmustergenerator is model picture generator.

I actually resorted to wandering the factory floor pointing at stuff, rather than trying to work out what the words mean.

So did you work out what a funkstormessempfanger was?

Not in my German dictionary. The Grimm (yes them) dictionary in umpteen volumes, published 1878. Could be something modern. Dunno.

The other half says he thinks that it is a measuring device which checks if electronic devices produce electromagnetic waves which could interfere with other electronics.

Sorry to shatter your illusions.....

That sounds plausible, given what the company does.

"The correct spelling is: Funkstörmessempfänger
‘Funkstörung’ means radiointerference,
and a 'Messempfänger' is a electronic device – a kind of radio receiver to measure electromagnetic interference - in this case, to measure the radiointerference."

(I asked Plymouth office's native German speaker.)
